For the most part I enjoyed this book a lot more then the other stories we have read thus far. The story was kept moving so it kept my attention a little more. At first it was hard to fully understand what was going on when the characters were speaking but in no time it was almost like second nature.
I thought some of the different scenes in the book were very interesting. It was also a very interesting representation of women during the time period. Some times it seemed like Janie was a typical women of the time but other times she shined and became more of a powerful woman who took her own life into her hands. She ran away from her first husband got married, stayed with another husband till he died, then married a third guy who stayed with until she had to kill him for protection. I dont really think that was a typical life style of what happened during the time.

Janie was a strong character in this time period. Although she was put down by her first two husbands, Janie never lost sight of her dreams. I think that refers back to the quote at the beginning of the novel.
I agree that this wasn't a typical lifestyle of women during this time. We can see this in the very beginnning of the novel. Janie had just returned from burying Tea Cake. The women sitting on the porch gossip about Janie. They refer to her wearing overalls, but I think that they are also addressing her life and her relationships.
I agree that this wasn’t a typical lifestyle for a woman around this time period. I would think that very few women were able to travel around and life the life that she was able to. She had money, which I’m sure most women couldn’t say for themselves. She also was able to move on with her life from situations where she wasn’t happy, to more and more comfortable surroundings. Eventually she was able to find her greatest sense of happiness and that was when she was with Tea Cake. She seemed to grow throughout the story into a happier person every time she changed her surroundings.
Since she didn’t life a typical lifestyle, she was an obvious target for the women of town. When she returned home she was the topic of conversations. While this was occurring I thought to myself that this was obviously a situation of envy. While Janie was away, seeing other parts of the country and living happily, the other women of the town were still sitting on the porch gossiping about others.
Even though Janie wasn’t always a powerful character when dealing with the men in her life, I still think she was a powerful woman of this time. She chose paths in her life that led to her advancing in society, and her eventual happiness. If she were a weak woman she would have stayed with Logan the rest of her life, and dealt with a situation that she didn’t want to be in.
Your right that she was defitly different then the women back then. She was strong and independent, especially to be black. She wasnt your typical women.Women were jelous of her because they would gossip about her. She was strong as an indivisual but in my opinion she wasnt as strong when it came to men because she stood with Jody and he was a mean man.
I like how you bring up a good point about how Janie isn't your typical female that you would think about back then. She does kind of have this feminist rebellion side with the fact that you don't really hear about women marrying three different men. I think though this really represents her because she didn't really care what people thought about her from the moment she was a child performing for white people till she was an adult.
