Make up Blog

Upon reading the beginning of Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, I actually thought it was somewhat interesting. The way the characters speak is what keeps my attention. I know a lot of people have issues reading like that but I find it entertaining. For some reason I wanted to read it with a European accent or something, I don’t know it was quite odd.

The beginning was very descriptive, even to the point where it was describing a female body. This particular female seems to make a lot of others very jealous. I think it was ironic that all the other girls thought the attractive woman came back for one thing when in fact they were completely wrong.

I really like the language too, but I found it slightly difficult when I started the reading. I don't know about a european accent though. I think more of a southern accent. I also found it very descriptive I thought it was almost funny the description of the woman's body especially after they were just judging her.

That is really interesting that you enjoy the way the characters speak. I think it can get a little confusing. I often find myself having to read the dialogue several times to understand it. I think it is because I have never had a class where we read stories with language like this. However, I must say it is much better than trying to read Shakespeare.
That is kind of strange that you wanted to read with a European accent. This may or may not be because you are also more familiar with Shakespearean dialogue as well.
I think it was very strange that there was such a description of the woman's body while they were actually talking badly about her. That was kind of ironic because she was described in a positive way.

I also enjoy reading this book, partially for the writing style that is used. It remeinds me a lot of "Hucklberry Finn." It is challenging at first but once you get used to it, I think it makes the reading better because you get a fuller image of the character. Language and a person's word choice can say a lot about a person and Hurston is able to capture that with her writing style.

They do describe Janies body very frequently in the novel. I find the language actually annoying because it's hard to read it.
